Everyday people come to me seeking advice on solutions
to life's big and small problems. But one question I get often (usually in a
sarcastic form of asking) is "what is the meaning of life"?
This isn't a question most people ask themselves, or
others, daily. Most of the time, the question is brought about by people
crossing the threshold into adulthood, by people that are in a state of
depression, or by people who are just pondering. Unfortunately, some people are
pushed to the point where they believe that no meaning exists for living, but
only the "day-to-day" struggle and procreation. This is actually the
foundation of the “human suicidal mindset”.
But, there is meaning. There are four components, to be exact.
Viktor
Frankl, a holocaust survivor, wrote a book about the meanings of life, and why it
is that people continue to live. It’s titled Man's Struggle for Meaning. He came up with three reasons:
1. Others- People want to live for other
people. Whether it be parents, siblings, spouse, family, friends, or even
strangers. It's like a sense of protection.
2. Deed- A job or duty can bound someone
to life. This coincides with a sense of fulfillment.
3. Attitude- The ability to decide and
change ones attitude, pending ones circumstance. This coincides with a persons
want for free will.
Wait a minute, that’s
only three. Well, the 4th isn't one that Frankl's discusses. I thought deeper Viktor
Frankl’s components and found that something was missing.
There are people who have lost everyone in their life
and have a job that isn't very meaningful. This can very well be a breeding
ground for an unstable and possibly suicidal mindset. So, what is it that gets people
in similar situations by day-to-day? Why do they get up every day and go about
their life? Well, this is because of the fourth component.
4. Potential- This slightly corresponds
with Attitude. People, I've noticed, have a natural instinct toward optimism
about life. No matter the situation one is currently in, the future is always
changing and unpredictable. This is why people have goals and dreams. There is
always hope for a better tomorrow.
